The mission of the Berryhill Education Foundation is to improve the quality of education for students in the Berryhill Public Schools. One way we do this is through classroom grants awarded every fall and spring. Amanda Howard teaches Family and Consumer Sciences at Berryhill High School and submitted a grant request for $500 for a Food Truck Festival project for the culinary classes.
The culinary students encountered multiple disciplines with this assignment including mathematics, entrepreneurship and culinary. Each group of students was given a budget of $20,000 to start their simulated food truck business and was required to:
Select a food truck theme and name
Create a full menu
Calculate the food cost and subsequent price for each menu item
Research the necessary cooking equipment and cost required for their truck
Build a model of their food truck including the interior kitchen space
Select one menu item to cook for the festival
Cook and plate their selected menu item to serve to invited school faculty, staff and guests
The festival took place on March 9th and these students did an amazing job! When you walked through the front doors of the high school, your senses were immediately greeted with the aroma of frying foods, melting cheeses, and baked sweets. And as soon as you stepped in the classroom kitchen, the ambitious energy and excitement felt like you were on the set of a TV cooking show competition!
The creativity of these culinary students absolutely blew us away! Every food truck model had clever slogans, incredible detail and eye-catching colors!
The students were able to do food prep before the day of the festival, but all of the final cooking and plating had to be done that day during class before the guests arrived. Talk about a real pressure cooker!
All the food we sampled was not only fun, but full of flavor and multiple components. These students are true chefs!
The guests of the Food Truck Festival voted on their favorite truck and food item!
Favorite Truck: Snow Cone
Favorite Food: Brisket Nachos from Nacho Bizz

Thank you Mrs. Howard and culinary students for all of the hard work you put into the Food Truck Festival! And thank you to everyone who has contributed to the BEF to make this classroom project possible!
